School musical program:

Wycheproof P12 College has a reputation for being a small school with a strong instrumental musical program. Involvement in the musical program promotes a positive climate for learning – (FISO priority – Empowering students and building school pride). The number of students involved in the program has steadily increased over the past five years to the point where there is now a junior and senior concert band. Students in Years 4 and above are placed into groups based on type of musical instrument and ability level. Students are encouraged to begin to read musical notes in primary school and as a result of this understanding, many are capable of playing several musical instruments. Various ceremonies and assemblies (such as ANZAC Day and Whole School Assembly), concerts (end of year primary and hospital concerts) and events (Battle of the Bands, Solos and Supper) often have a musical component and such act as an opportunity for students to perform or practice in front of others. Students also have the opportunity to sit music exams and over the years have attended various music eisteddfods and produced musical CDs. This ‘wealth of talent’ is largely due to the efforts of Jan Elder (our Instrumental and VCE Music Teacher) who has worked hard over the years to implement a program which ensures students are engaged and motivated to regularly practice their musical instrument at home. School Council are well aware of the benefits of the current music program and ensure the program will continue to be a priority funding focus into the future. Several students have been awarded musical scholarships over the past few years which act as a source of encouragement. A House Music Competition has also been added to the annual events calendar and a bi-annual bush dance provides an opportunity for parents and children to be involved together in the celebration of music.
