School sporting achievements:
There is a rich sporting culture at Wycheproof P12 College with teams consistently winning the standardised aggregate shields in the North Central Division for swimming, cross-country and athletics. The school takes great pride in its sporting success and considerable time resources have been input into ensuring the school is well-resourced (FISO priority – strategic resource management). Although there are separate events (at various times of the year) for primary and secondary sports, there are numerous school sports days where the whole school is combined for a House Sports Competition. This acts as an important event for parental and community engagement and gives House Captains a chance to model leadership skills to younger students. In recent years, some House Sports Days have been combined with Nullawil Primary School enabling connections between the two schools to be fostered. Staff and community members are encouraged to model healthy fitness behaviours to students and numerous staff are often involved in out of school hours training/coaching positions within the wider community (such as swimming, football, netball, tennis and hockey). Regular communications with students and parents encourage students to understand the connection between physical and mental health. Students are encouraged to maintain a good baseline level of fitness through incentives such as ‘Fit for Feb’ and various school competitions. Parents are often very encouraging and supportive of their child’s involvement in wider sporting opportunities (outside of school hours) and sometimes will drive their children considerable distances to ensure their children are involved in additional sporting opportunities that are not found in Wycheproof. The school regularly has students who are awarded individual age and team champions for various North Central District sporting events (including triathlons, clay target-shooting and bowls) and go on to represent the district at State level sporting events.
